Miss Potter | Inspired by Film Fashion Event

Sweater | Tulle
Armistice Edwardian blouse | Kellie Falconer Design
Skirt | Thrifted
Wristwatch | borrowed
Boots | Sorelia Earhart
belt | Thrifted

I've loved the work of Beatrix Potter for as long as I can remember... the essence of the world she captured in her art has always been my ideal of fairyland.  Subtly realistic, mingling sunshine and shadow in a perfect world where animals talk, teatime is essential, and the mist and mossy landscape of the English countryside is captured in romantic perfection.

When I was small, I would watch the live action period intros to the classic animated Peter Rabbit films over and over and never tire of them... the song, 'Perfect Day', is still one of my favorites.  Be sure to click the music player near the top of the post and listen as you read!

There's a certain kind of weather during a certain time of year that I always call 'Beatrix Potter weather' - when the wild green things begin to push out of damp earth, the snow to melt into cascades and marshes and small rivers hurrying downstream.  When the sky is steel grey, with bold rolling clouds hurrying away across it.  When the moss is so richly green that your heart aches with the joy of living to see it.  When the wind blows softly, chilled, but with whispers of a wild, warm summertime to come.

Today was that kind of day, in the early Spring that tiptoes softly in on the heels of a dark, cold winter.

.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.

My outfit is inspired by something I imagine Miss Potter would have worn, and I can easily imagine Anne Shirley going on a March woodland ramble in something similar, as well.

  6. Oh Kelly, this is gorgeous! One of my favorite photoshoots of you yet! Just stunning and oh-so-perfect. :) You make me smile. Also, I remember those animated Peter Rabbit films too! Funny, because I wouldn't think anyone else saw them. The intro song was one of the most beautiful on earth to my little-girl mind. I still hum it once and awhile. ;) --so thanks for the memory!

  9. I love this outfit, especially the way you photographed it outside... very England countryside-ish. :) You mentioned your childhood pastime of watching the live action intros to the Peter Rabbit animated films, and I have to say I did the same thing when I was little, and I still do. My sister watches them often, and I always stop by the doorway whenever I hear the music come on. I think my favorite intro is the one where she's sitting outside with her easel and collie painting the landscape and then she goes home in the rain. It's just so beautiful.

  12. Kellie! This is seriously one of the most beautiful and inspiring photo sessions I have ever seen! Your outfit is truly beautiful (so Anne-esque!) and the settings and props you used in your photos were so well chosen! The photos with the water in them were especially beautiful! Great eye and good job!

  16. This photoshoot is a work of art! You look beautiful and the photo journey set to music is magical! I love your Edwardian blouse that you made too. So lovely and the whole outfit feels so much like what Beatrice Potter would have been wearing on a walk to paint in the woods.

  19. My mom decorated my nursery with Peter Rabbit everything, so Beatrix Potter's art, and general atmosphere, have always been quite dear to me. Perfect Day is one of my favorites, too. :)

  23. Lovely, lovely photos! Your snapshots look a bit like stills from Miss Potter, and there's Mary the Hedgehog posing as Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle! What fun!

Oh my, Peter Rabbit and Friends! My dad taped those for us when the Family Channel ran them, and now we have the whole series (including ones we hadn't seen before) on DVD. Yes! The song at the end is lovely...one might even say hauntingly beautiful.
    Ahh...memories.

    God bless,

  24. I owe Ashely for having this fashion event; it led me here! I am absolutely captivated by your blog - I blush to admit I MIGHT have just spent close to an hour browsing your archives. I'm fascinated that you live in a tent...or a bus, rather, now. I've wanted to do that for years! Maybe someday I'll get that chance. I've done a lot of camping on vacations with my family; not as recreation, exactly, but as a substitute for hotels. LOVE cooking over a fire! ...Never cooked on a wood stove, though. Would love to try it! :) The area you live in is gorgeous. Or maybe it's the photographer. :) Probably both, yes? :) :)

I love your sense of style, and I love the enjoyment you have in little things. I love your taste for beauty. I like how trials lead you to speaking of God. And I like the music influence in your family; my family plays gospel bluegrass too. :) :) I've just loaded your blog into my google feed, and I look forward to getting to know you better by keeping up with your posts. Thanks for taking the time to blog! :)

  29. Oh! My! I simply adore your outfit, Kellie! And I LOVED those Beatrix Potter movies growing up -- still do in fact. THANK YOU so much for including the, 'Perfect Day' song in your post. I've been trying to discover what that song was called & who sung it for a couple of years now (after loosing our CD about 10 years ago). I've now been listening to that song on repeat this whole past week. :D

    Thanks for linking up!
