Enter Algy

Friends, I cannot believe the day has come.  That I am writing this post.
The words don't seem to come as I would like... but moments, great ones, come and go in the blink of an eye every day.  Fretting over the organization of meaningless words to convey such a momentous announcement seems like a waste of this precious moment.

So instead, I'll just let Algy introduce himself with photographs.  It's what he does best, after all.

Those first few minutes after I opened the box, lifted out the lens, set it into position against the camera body and heard the precise, suave click as they screwed together in place.  It was magical.
We looked around the tent, my home.

Taking in those little things, those little glimpses of a life.  Small steps.  Insignificant scenes, slowly melting somewhere in time to become a beautiful and meaningful memory.
Like learning to dance, we started our journey to discover the art of capturing light and memories.
I had no idea of being able to purchase a DSLR anywhere in my near future... but God had another plan.
Out of the blue He made it possible, and last Friday a trip to town found me standing at the checkout at Costco, laying down bills in hundred dollar stacks on the counter with a hand trembling from excitement.

The set included a Nikon D3100, the 18-55 mm kit lens, and the 55-200mm lens, as well as an ugly-ish camera bag (smile), strap, DVD course, and lovely little odds and ends like a charger and lens hood.
And if you're wondering why his name is Algy... well...

...it's because Sir Percy just didn't seem to be a quite right fit for a Nikon.
And I shall get a lovely strap and case for him so we can go Bunburying.

A door has been opened.  Beauty I cannot quite capture, a world I cannot quite understand, lies beyond.
Waiting to be explored.

To my photographer friends and readers - I would love to hear any advice you have for a DSLR newbie!  Camera and lens care, spare battery recommendations, uploading tips?  Though I've been devouring every photography book and website I can get my hands on, I know so little - and this is such a deep and fascinating world!  Shoot... I'm all ears.

Happy Saturday, everyone!

I'm saving up to get one, but like you, I don't really know much about DSLR cameras either. I hope you get the hang of it all soon!

  7. What a splendid array of camera parts sitting on your desk! Oh the fun you will have and the adventure you will enjoy as you and Algy explore the world through his lenses!! I, for one, can't wait to visit along with you as you share what you find. North Idaho just got a lot more closer to Florida!! Ohh, and what a sweet face of Matilda and all of the Falconer Farm friends too! Photograph me, photograph me!! Who is next?

  9. Hurrah! *Confetti* Isn't is wonderful--amazing--even a little humbling--when God makes reality something you'd almost given up hoping for? What's that verse in Proverbs? "A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul...." Our God is truly an Awesome God!

You're so clever at naming things. I probably would have named your new camera "Nicky." :-P Silly Tom....

Congratulations on a dream come true!
    God bless,
    ~"Tom"~

  10. I am fairly new to photography too, but here are a few things that I have found helpful...

    *shoot in RAW... it takes up tons more space, but it is totally worth it if you want to edit. {I use picasa to edit all my pics- I love it!}

*take a gazillion pictures of everything- especially if you doing portraits.

*I would get a lense filter- they are around $10 each, but it protects the lense from getting scratched...

    Have fun! :)

  11. Sereina - Thanks! That looks like an awesome resource I haven't seen yet.

Hehe... Tom, you're making me laugh. And Our God is truly an Awesome God, Amen!

Wonderful tips, Hannah! Thank you! I'll be looking into lens filters for sure.
And so encouraging that I have one thing down anyways... taking a gazillion pictures of everything is how I roll. ;D

Confetti for everyone! Thanks so much for stopping by<3

  12. Nikon!!! Every photographer's dream :) BIG congrats, Kellie! You most certainly do have an eye for photography and that is such a nifty tool to be using :) Can't wait for my upgrade..just look at these pics! :P

Learn all you can about aperture and shutter speed. Really kicks picture taking up a notch. So much more flexibility in what you can do for the final outcome :] Have fun!!!
