The challenge is simple: Take some time and share the gift of reading with someone you know. A sibling, a neighbor - you know who they are!
Is there a child you know that could use a wonderful story of adventure and imagination?
One of my favorite things is reading to my little sisters, sharing those stories I learned to love in my own childhood with a new audience. It's magical.
And to help you get started, here are some ideas to use as a springboard for organizing a Summer Reading Event of your own!
Plan a Summer Reading Party for friends, family or neighbors.
2. Depending on the age and size of your group, go to the public library to pick a few new books to read together.
3. Gather friends and family in a circle, select a well known and well loved story, and takes turns retelling it in your own words. This is so much fun!
4. Host a Literary Picnic - take baskets, lunches, and favorite books, and spend the afternoon together with your favorite characters, literary and real life.
5. Take a segment of time each evening for a week, gathering your siblings or children around for a bedtime story read-aloud!
6. Use your imagination, be creative, and enjoy the thrill of sharing the gift of literature with others. I'd love to hear how you do!

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun giveaway!(: I had several favorite books when I was a little girl, but two of my favorites were (are!) "All Creatures Great and Small," by James Herriot, and "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." I also had a huge collection of Beatrix Potter's tales that I would pore over for hours!

Ummmm, that's so hard! When I was little, I loved to read! (well, actually Mom and Dad read to me but I still loved books) But my favorite was definitely 'It's Time for Bed' by Mem Fox, illustrated by Jane Dyer. I LOVED it and I will admit that I still do. 'It's time for bed, little mouse, little mouse. Darkness is falling all over the house.' This is a great book to read to your little brothers and sisters!

ReplyDeleteI'm a follower. My favorite book was a nusery rhyme book my grandmother gave me as a child. Later, my favorite books became the Little House on the Prairie series.
ReplyDeleteI love the Little Golden Books, The Shy Little Kitten being my favorite. My dad would send me and my siblings recordings of himself reading to us when he was away with the army. It helped my little brothers to fall asleep to the sound of his voice.

Love the idea of a literary party. I am inspired. Found your blog through True Love Never Dies. My favourite book as a kid was Dr. Suess's I wish that I had Duck feet. My 6 year old loves it as well.

(I remember getting 4 or 5 books every week from the library, and having to read them multiple times before we got new ones again :p) I think my favorite from when I was little was Wynken Blynken & Nod, then when I was older, it was Anne of Green Gables series. ReplyDeleteI did not like to read at all until I was in the 7th or 8th grade and read a book about a princess and common girl that were switched at birth ... but I can't remember the title. After that I began to find books more interesting.
