Of cabbages and kings...

Saturday was the annual cabbage harvest.  Each October, we harvest cabbages from a family-owned farm in our area right out of the field and make the year's sauerkraut.  It's so much fun - mother, sisters, aprons, big knives, crisp autumn air - and all of those beautiful cabbages.

Briefly, I'm going to expound a little on these humble yet amazing plants - have you ever seen a growing cabbage?  It's truly a thing of rare beauty.  Roses are lovely - yet most people never observe the remarkable similarity between these two manifestations of God's handiwork.  The large, veined outer leaves, covered with earth and frost damage, are pulled away to reveal a perfect, fragrant, blooming ball, composed of tightly-curling leaves.  I'm laughing at myself a little as I type for going on so about cabbages, but they really are perfectly lovely! =)

And the sauerkraut... oh, but I'll be sharing that step in a future post.  It's a recipe you won't want to miss!

By the way, I want to give a great big thank you to Keren of Free Pretty Things for You as well as Dondi of the darling Etsy shop DondaLee's for pretty much rendering me speechless with delight on Saturday evening!

Dondi sponsored an amazingly sweet giveaway on Keren's lovely blog, and, beyond my wildest imaginings, I won!  To top it off, Keren made this too-darling-for-words little graphic for me.  I will definitely be using the adorable freebies Keren offers in a project some day, and I encourage you to stop by these lovely ladies' little web homes to say hello!
